     Playing Poker is an art

There are several variations of poker, and each variations may also have some twists according to house rules and who you are playing with. Each of these versions still uses the basic format of poker, though, and what follows is the foundation for all games.
Depending on the rules of the variation played, one or more players may be required to place an initial amount of money into the pot prior to the cards being dealt. These amounts are known as forced bets, and there are three forms: antes, blinds, and bring-ins.

To start the card rounds, a dealer shuffles the cards, cuts the deck, and deals the amount of cards required to each player face down. If you are playing in a casino, the house dealer is the person who handles the cards for each hand. A marker (called the button or the buck, just a small device used as a maker) is rotated between the players to determine the order of dealing and betting in certain games. In a game you are playing at home, the dealer position will typically rotate clockwise between the players, but you might still use a button.

After the first hand has been dealt out, the first betting round begins. There may be several rounds of betting per hand. Between betting rounds, hands are developed, usually by the dealing out additional cards or replacing cards that have already been dealt. During a round of betting, there will be a current amount of bets already placed, the total amount of money bet in the round by the last player who was the last to bet in the round. The best way to keep track of the amount is for the players not to place their bets directly in the pot, but rather to have them in front of them until the betting round is over. When the round ends, the amounts are then added into the pot.

After the completion of the first betting round, after every participating player has called an equal amount) there may be more rounds. More dealing of cards will be followed by more betting. If at any time during the betting rounds one player makes a bet and all the others fold, the deal is ended, the player who did not fold gets the pot, no cards are shown, and the next deal starts. This is the key to poker, as it enables the strategy of bluffing.
At the end of the last betting round, is more than one player is remaining, there is a showdown in which each player reveals their hidden cards and the hands are evaluated. The player with the best hand wins the pot, and the next deal commences.
