Checking Checking is a very important fundamental in the game of poker. When a player checks, its typically because they're not holding anything, they're on a fishing expedition to gain insight to what other players have, or they just want to catch someone of guard and trap them. Most of the time, people will check each time they get a bad or mediocre hand, however checking is so much more powerful when its used in combination with a subsequent bet. When people check all of the time, what they're actually doing is missing out of using a check to their benefit. Statistics show that 75% of all poker hands during a game end up as hands that will be folded. So with that in mind, if you were to check and fold on all of these hands, and marginally decent poker player is going to know to leave you be if you decide not to fold after a check. Therefore, bluffing is something that is very useful when you combine it with checking and will have a much greater effect on your opponents since it's not nearly as common as just bluffing alone. |
