Raising It's not secret that one of the most attractive things about the game of poker is raising. Not only is it fun, but it's also the part of the game that lets us demonstrate our power and skill. But how do we know when we should raise versus when we shouldn't? Below are examples of reasons on why to raise as opposed to just doing it to appear intimidating. One logical and very common reason for raising the pot would be to add more money to it when you're the favorite to win the hand. Obviously, it you're favored to win, it would behoove you to through in more money and increase your winnings. However, just because you're "favored" to win a pot, doesn't guarantee that you will, which leads us to another reason for raising, which is to narrow down the field of play, which will in turn, increase your chances of winning. Doing this is actually the #1 reason for poker players to raise. Another good reason to raise if you can manipulate your opponent to lay down his cards by bluffing them into doing so. Also, raising it essentialy if you're doing it to pick the brain of your opponent to gain some insight to what his hand is. By doing this you will have a much greater advantage since you'll be able to help determine what types of habits and strategies your oppenent is using. Remember, raising is not only exciting, but it's also a beautiful thing if you do it for the right reasons, and with a definite purpose and focus on your outcome.
